As the world celebrates the 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi this October, his grandson, Dr. Arun Gandhi, will bring the principles of peace, inclusivity and non-violence to western North Carolina for an inspiring public event, “Be The Change: Creating Peace Within and Without.” Held at Unity of The Blue Ridge in Mills River on Saturday, October 5, Dr. Gandhi will offer his presentation twice, once at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m.

Dr. Gandhi will outline the steps every individual can take towards creating peace within and without. Advancing the legacy of his grandfather, Arun says “Peace is the creating of understanding, equality and harmony in self and society.” Arun learned the lessons of peace and nonviolence firsthand, beginning at age 12 when he was sent to live with his grandfather. Arun was born in South Africa during the time of the nation’s apartheid laws. As an Indian, he was a victim of racial violence and his teenage anger led his parents to send him to live with his grandfather for two years.

Grandfather Gandhi taught his grandson through stories, parables and various disciplines “to channel anger for good and turn weakness into strength; understanding it as a lifelong process”.

As founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, Arun has committed his life to the process, education, and practice of peace, equality and non-violence; working with governments, leaders, institutions and individuals around the globe. In his first visit to North Carolina, Arun will share the stories and teachings of his grandfather in a captivating presentation; he will then respond to questions from the audience. A book sale and signing will follow.

The special event is sponsored by Unity of The Blue Ridge with co-sponsoring organizations and faith communities. The Reverend Darlene Strickland, Senior Minister at Unity of The Blue Ridge says, “Love your neighbor as yourself is the call of our times. With escalating attitudes and actions fueled by hatred and divisiveness, we need an intervention. More precisely, we must BE the intervention. As Gandhi said, ‘We must be the change we wish to see in the world.’”

The event will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Unity of The Blue Ridge, 2041 Old Fanning Bridge Rd. Mills River, N.C. 28759. The presentation is offered twice: 10 AM - Noon and 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Limited Seating. Tickets must be purchased in advance at unityblueridge.org or by calling 828-891-8700.
