Shirl is a mother of three biological children and three blended family children. She has four grandchildren and two cats!
 
With a degree in early childhood education Shirl spent 34 years focused on exceptional children in the educational system, she is currently retired and spends a portion of her day as a school bus driver.
 
Having been born into a strong Baptist family Shirl converted to Islam as an adult.  As an African American Islamic woman Shirl has experience Racism on many levels. After the attacks in 9/11 the violence and racism against people of the Islamic faith increased in the United States. Shirl faced the sting of racism as not only an African American woman but also a woman of the Islamic faith.
