An Evening of Mystical Poetry with Tracey Schmidt and Terri Crosby

An Evening of Mystical Poetry with Tracey Schmidt and Terri Crosby Friday, September 20th, 7:30 - 9:30 PM / $15 Love Offering

Local poet and photographer Tracey Schmidt and poet Terri Crosby will combine their talents for an evening of Mystical Poetry. Tracey will read from Rumi, Hafiz, and Mary Oliver, as well as her own poetry, with musical accompaniment. Terri will read from her new book "100 Words: Small Servings of Whimsy and Wisdom" as well as from newer, unpublished work. A portion of the proceeds will support Tracey's educational, fine art traveling museum exhibit called "The Awakening of Turtle Island: Portraits of Native Americans." We hope you'll pass the word, and come join us.

We will be combining live music with a segment of the poetry reading, which Tracey began to do after seeing Robert Bly read poetry to music. She realized that it was a natural fit.

Each poem in Terri's book "100 Words: Small Servings of Whimsy and Wisdom" is one hundred words long, on subjects such as creativity, relationships, grief, nature and change. She is also in the final edit stages of producing her second book (non-fiction) about relationships, specifically for women who have been married multiple times.

Tracey has toured internationally with both teaching and reciting poetry. Her museum exhibit won the Regional Designation Award in the Humanities when it was created, and was part of the Cultural Olympiad in Atlanta in 1996.  Her book of poetry, I Have Fallen in Love with the World” is in its second printing. She recorded her poetry with members of the phenomenal local group Free Planet Radio in a CD called “Returning Home.” She is teaching an Artist’s Way class here in Asheville beginning in September.

From Terri: We met through a mutual friend who suggested that the two of us have a similar reverence for life, nature and relationships of belonging. As Tracey and I talked, we realized that supporting a cause by reading poetry together would not only be a way to raise awareness about Tracey’s museum exhibit, but would also be a good reason to bring the entire community together. We hope people will give themselves the gift of joining us.

From Tracey: "One of the things I love most about Rumi, Hafiz and Mary Oliver (all of whom I will be reciting, along with my own work), is that they create a spaciousness that allows the reader to enter the poem where they are.  There is room for everyone to find themselves there."

How will the funds be used to support The Awakening of Turtle Island?

From Tracey: "New museum guidelines require me to update much of the educational text panels, and I am now photographing some of the subjects that I photographed 20 years ago. I am so excited to be adding to this exhibit. It has toured to over 18 museums in the southeast; I am looking for it to go on a national tour now."
